Ajax have released their new away shirt for the 2010-11 season with Adidas manufacturing the new kits. The new Ajax away shirt is dark navy in colour with the Adidas stripes appearing on the shoulder in a neon yellow. The full Ajax away kit is completed with navy shorts and socks both with the yellow detailing.

Feyenoord

The new Feyenoord home shirt is the clubs  traditional red and white colour split in two with the left half being white and the right red. The sleeves are the opposite colour from that side of the shirt. The home kit will be completed with black shorts and socks both with red detailing.

The new Feyenoord away shirt is all white with black and red detailing on the shoulders. The shorts and socks of the away kit are also white with red and black detailing.

It has been a couple of weeks now since the Haiti disaster but it looks like more support is needed so we are likely to see more high profile appeals and exposure for the appeal.

In the 90’s, the club finally cracked the top flight, but their place in the Eriedivisie was not secure, and they proceeded to swing between the top flight and second tier.

The late 90’s saw the club finally begin to achieve some successes, with the club qualifying for the UEFA Cup Winners Cup after Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his last goal in a special qualifying game against Twente. The 1999-2000 season saw the club achieve its highest ever position, by finishing 2nd. This allowed the club to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

The club moved to its new home Abe Lenstra Stadion  in 1994, and seats 26,800. This has allowed the club a degree financial security, along with an ability to sell on some amazing players they have developed. Such as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and Afonso Alves.

The club itself plays in white socks, white shorts, and a white and blue shirt. The club emblem is taken from the Friesland flag. And features the clubs name written in a ribbon across the centre of the badge.

The kit itself is manufactured by the German company, Jako, and comes in blue and white stripes, with red trim. A major feature of the kit is another image taken from the Friesland flag. In between the blue stripes, they feature what looks like several red hearts. However, they are actually to represent water lilies, or “Pompebled.” The flower of Friesland.

The clubs sponsor, a co-operative insurance company, Unive Verzekeringen features across the chest. Jako has its logo on the right side of the chest.

Finally, a unique note about the club. Before every game, the Dutch league allows the club to play the Friesian national anthem. However, UEFA do not, so the fans sing it anyway!

The mid 1960’s Ajax is the team that is commonly accredited for creating the idea of “total football” and the early 1970’s saw the club finally achieve a period of dominance domestically, as well as enjoying European success.

Ajax’ fortunes went in waves, over the next couple of decades, with the late 70’s seeing a decline, the 80’s saw the introduction of players such as van Basten and Reijkaard, with another small decline so in the early 90’s the club rose once more. Culminating in winning the European cup in 1995.

The club itself is named after Ajax, of Greek legend. The hero who was never defeated. The original logo for the club when it was founded was just a picture of a player. A logo incorporating Ajax was introduced in 1928. Then in 1990, a new abstract version was introduced. Using 11 lines to represent the 11 players on the field.

The new logo is seen by some in Ajax’ fan base as the public image of the clubs management style, which they see as somewhat cold, and money orientated.

Beginning life, the club took the colours of Amsterdam. Playing in a red and white striped shirt, with black shorts. Unfortunately, upon promotion to the top league, they come up against  Sparta Rotterdam who played in the same kit. As there was no mandate for “away” kits at the time, the rules said that the new team has to change its kit to avoid any clashes and confusion.

This led to the club opting to switch to white shorts, and keeping the red and white shirt. Though replacing the original stripes with 1 broad red stripe that runs up the middle of the kit!

The kit for a long time, where manufactured by Umbro, with the sponsor, Abn Amro running vertically on the left side of the red stripe, and the clubs logo switching between the centre, and the left side.

Now, the kit is manufactured by Adidas. Notably, the first kit lacked Adidas’ ubiquitous 3 stripes on the sleeves. A small victory for Ajax.

The new Ajax kit however, has been manufactured using Adidas’ “Climacool” technology, and has seen a return of Adidas’ striping over the shoulder. The clubs logo is over on the left side of the chest, and features the clubs new sponsor, Aegon. An insurance and pension company.

On the back of the shirt, located at the nape of the neck, Adidas has stitched in the crest for the city  of Amsterdam.

The club is located in the south of Rotterdam, in the Feijenoord district of the city, and began life back in 1908 as Wilhelmina, playing in red shirts with blue sleeves. Between 1908 and 1912, the club went through a series of changes, becoming the Hillesluise Football Club a year later, then on to RVV Celeritas. When they finally entered to the national leagues, they finally adopted the name SC Feijenoord, and adopted the red and white halved shirts that they wear today.

They finally moved to their now home back in the 30’s, a time when they enjoyed a series of successes, with 3 league titles, and 2 national championships. Unfortunately, the war years where not so kind to Feyenoord. Whilst they where able to win the national title in 1940 with a divisional title as well, it was not in their home. De Kuip had been occupied by the Nazis. This forced the club to ground share with Sparta Rotterdam, and if there was a clash, to go back to their original home.

The professional era was ushered in when Feyenoord joined in with a meeting that saw several other club chairmen and the KNVB discuss going professional. Feyenoord joined the inaugural season of the Eriedivisie, 1954-55, and they have not been relegated since joining!

After the birth of the professional league, Feyenoord began to rapidly develop one of the most intense rivalries in football today, with Ajax from Amsterdam. A rivalry that has earned the moniker of “de Klassieker.” Or “the Classic.”

In the mid 1960’s, Feyenoord began to make waves in Europe, famously sending 2 shiploads of fans to Lisbon for a European Cup semi-final against Benfica, and becoming the first Dutch club to lift a European title when they beat Celtic to lift the European Cup in 1970.

This sustained European success saw the club make another major change. Most foreigners struggle to pronounce the “ij” combination in Dutch properly, so the club dropped those from the name, and replaced them with the more foreigner-friendly “y.” Becoming “Feyenoord.”

For almost the clubs entire history they have played in halved red and white shirts, with alternate sleeves.  The clubs logo is a simple roundel, halved red and white, like the shirt, with a superimposed white “F.” This is within a black ring that carries the club name. This was modified for their 100 year celebrations, with the white lettering being replaced with gold.

The current kit is manufactured by the German company Puma, taking over from Kappa. Puma has used their standard template for kits with the ubiquitous flashes that come from over the shoulder and nearly meet under the collar. A la Tottenham Hotspur, Jubilo Awata, and many others.

For Feyenoord, the kit was still the traditional halved kit of red and white, with the sleeves contrasting to the main body of the kit. The shoulder flashes where initially introduced as opposite to the colour on that side of the shirt. So, on the right, the kit was red, with a white flash, and vice versa on the right.

This led to a huge outcry amongst the fans who objected to Puma breaking up the kits traditional clean halves. Such was the outcry that Puma had no choice but to return with an updated new kit, where they had switched the shoulder flashes. They are still included in the kit, but now they are the same colour, which makes them far less obtrusive.

The clubs logo is  on the left side of the chest with a gold star above, and on the chest is the clubs new sponsor, ASR Verzekeringen. ASR also have small patches on either sleeve. Puma has its cat logo on the right side of the chest, as well as on each shoulder.

The new Feyenoord 3rd shirt is light yellow in colour with black detailing on the end of the sleeves and two black stripes down the right hand side one going all the way to the base of the shirt and the other half way.

Ajax are probably the most well known and well supported of the Dutch teams across the world.  The club has a lot of history and no doubt they will be looking to improve on their previous season domestic league position of 3rd place.  Last season’s poor league performance meant there was a change in management, with Van Basten leaving and Jol coming in as his replacement.  Jol will be looking to start afresh and maybe the new shirt will bring a bit of extra luck to his side’s results.

Ajax as a club are steeped in history, going back to the times when Johan Cruyff was the main man for them, then coming through to the 90’s with players like Bergkamp, Kluivert, Davids, Overmars and more having played for them. Towards the late 90’s they had got the reputation of being a team that made the best of their youth policy and many other teams around the world would be trying to replicate it.

There are many choices of name and number to be added to this shirt, not only are there the players I mentioned already, but also other more recent players like Ibrahimovic, Suarez, Huntelaar and Vermaelen.  I personally would go for Bergkamp if I had to choose.

The four time European Cup winners play in the Dutch Eredivise and are now managed by Martin Jol. The design of the latest Ajax jersey is similar to the previous season.

The Ajax home kit remains the traditional red and white colours in keeping with the clubs past.

The jersey has a white collar and red piping around the ends of the sleeves. The club badge is on the left of the shirt and the makers have their logo in the top centre of the chest in white and have their three stripes running down both sleeves in red.

The 2009-10 Ajax football shirts will be sponsored by Aegon.

Puma will continue to manufacture the Feyenoord shirts with the Puma badge appearing on the right chest and on both shoulders with the club badge being on the left chest of the shirt.The Fyenoord home kit will be in their traditional home colours of white and red with the shirt being split into two halves, white on the left and red on the right with opposite coloured sleeves.

ASR will be the sponsors of the club next year taking over from Fortis who had sponsored Feyenoord the season before.

The New Puma 2009-10 Feyenoord home shirt will be released later this month but pre-orders are available now.
