The newly released Newcastle United home shirt (09/10) is probably one of the best they’ve had since the Bobby Robson days – maybe this will kick start their Championship season and get them back into the Premier League!
Like previous seasons, the kit is made by sportswear giants Adidas again, but unlike the majority of the big teams – they haven’t used the same template for Newcastle United. It’s a different type of material compared to the releases in the last few years. The material is softer and feels very similar to the one worn in the 1999-2000 or 2003-2005 season.
The famous Newcastle black and white stripes are there as usual, although the strip is more white than black – compared to last season’s strip. This new release sports a classy, retro, 80’s style V-neck collar and the Adidas logo is in the centre with the Newcastle crest underneath, whilst shirt sponsors Northern Rock’s logo runs across the chest. The legendary three Adidas stripes on each sleeve add to this excellent looking strip. Another feature of this strip is the embossed seahorse, which can be found on individual stripes and is different on every strip.
On the back of the shirt you’ll find a large white patch, so you can choose your favourite player’s name and number to be printed on – or even go for a past Newcastle legend – perhaps, Shearer 9?
With poor performances over the last several years, there is now an air of renewed optimism on Tyneside. A lot of existing and aging players on large wages will have to be sold to balance the books and a new, fresh start is on the horizon. Who knows, perhaps they could emulate the “The Entertainers” side managed by Kevin Keegan, when they stormed the Premier League after being newly promoted in 1993?
