Review of the 2008-10 Liverpool home shirt

Liverpool Football Club is a club of tradition and history. Currently the most successful English club, Adidas’ latest design for Liverpool’s new home kit reflects much of their history. At first glance, it appears to be very similar to the previous season’s home shirt; however, upon closer inspection, there are noticeable differences. The most obvious difference is that the stripes do not travel to the edge of the sleeve completely. This gap provides a convenient spot for the various competition badges to be displayed. Just inside the collar is a chequered design emblazoned with the words “THIS IS ANFIELD”, the message that greets the players in the tunnel as they enter the pitch. Also prominent is the symbolic liver bird, which can also be found on the chequered design and on the reverse of the shirt. The shirt also boasts Adidas’ ‘ClimaCool’, which according to Adidas “actively conducts heat and sweat away from the body”. The Liverpool badge is proudly displayed above the heart.

This shirt was an undeniable success. It is all too easy to adorn modern shirts with unnecessary additions; however Adidas kept its looks simple, yet stylish. In 1964, Bill Shankly first sent Liverpool out all in red, and from that day on it was the tradition. Relatively few embellishments allows for the dominance of red, supposedly symbolising danger and power. The shirt is lightweight, making it very comfortable to wear. In particular, the fabric means that when playing in the rain, the wearer is not restricted by the wet and heavy fabric, whilst in the sun excess sweat is quickly removed. The shirt doesn’t just look good on the football pitch; it is a smart shirt to wear off it as well. With Liverpool edging towards success on the pitch, the shirt is a must have for any Liverpool fan.
